In Nordic countries, a national alarm is used to alert police forces about a serious situation that requires additional measures, highlighting the severity of the robbery from the Strängnäs Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon.
The two suspects, who remain on the run, escaped the crime scene on a speedboat. Police think they might have abandoned this mode of transport but remain interested in locating it.
But the police also now fear that the jewels – two Royal crowns of King Karl IX and Queen Kristina, along with one Royal orb – which had been on public display at the cathedral, might be transported out of the country.
They have ramped up their investigation by logging the theft with Interpol, which will prompt an international search for the stolen items and suspects.
Police presence has been ramped up, with boats and helicopters being used in the city of Strängnäs and in Tynnelsö.
They had earlier revealed that it is possible to reach Mälaren, Köping or Arboga in the west by boat, or Västerås, Eskilstuna or Stockholm if you drive east.
A spokesperson said: “It’s 1-0 to them right now.
“I have talked to someone at the county administrative board that says it is not possible to put an economic value on them – these are invaluable objects of national interest.
“We are looking for a small and open motorboat. We have some different information about how exactly the boat looked. We are now examining all the tips we receive.”
He added: “The police’s work has continued during the night but it has not resulted in any significant successes in the form of suspected persons or detention.
“The police are still keen to get further tips from the public.”
In 2013, thieves also managed to steal the crown of Gustav Vasa’s son Johan III again from Strängnäs Cathedral, but the jewels were found abandoned in a black bin bag in a ditch following an anonymous tip-off.
