Lena Elizabeth joined the Tindall family in June and is the second daughter of Zara and Mike.
Lena is the younger sister of four year old Mia Grace Tindall, who was born in 2014.
The couple announced the name of their daughter Lena nine days after they welcomed her into the world on June 18.
But speaking to HELLO! Magazine, the Queen’s granddaughter revealed why the couple had chosen Lena Elizabeth as the name of their youngest daughter.
The mother-of-two described how she able to choose a “more distinct” name than the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who will one day be King and Queen.
The equestrian champion said: “We were able to be more adventurous than say, William.
“It’s pronounced Lay-na. We chose it because it’s a name we both like. It’s also similar to Mia’s because it’s distinct, not shortened from another name.”
Lena, which is of Greek origin, means “sunshine”.
Meanwhile Elizabeth is believed to be a nod to Zara’s grandmother the Queen.
Kate and William’s choice of Louis Arthur Charles was a nod to Prince Charles who also shares the middle name Arthur and his beloved uncle and ‘Honorary grandfather’, Lord Mountbatten.
Lord Mountbatten, whose first name was Louis, was killed in 1979 after the IRA placed a bomb in his fishing boat.
After Lena’s birth, Zara’s rugby player husband Mike revealed his wife has been “doing really well”.
He said: “Zara’s doing really well. She’s always amazing and she’s been fantastic again.
“Mia has been a good big sister and is really enjoying it. We’ll see what happens when Lena starts crawling around and getting a bit more attention. A few years down the line it’ll be brilliant for them to be playmates.”
In an official announcement in June, Buckingham Palace said of the birth of Lena: “Mrs Michael Tindall was safely delivered of a baby girl on 18th June, at Stroud Maternity Unit.
“Mr Tindall was present at the birth. The weight of the baby was 9lbs 3oz.
“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Princess Royal, Captain Mark Phillips and Mike’s parents, Mr Philip and Mrs Linda Tindall, have been informed and are delighted with the news. The baby’s name will be confirmed in due course.
“This baby is the second child for Zara and Mike, the fourth grandchild for The Princess Royal and the seventh great-grandchild for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.”
