Princess Diana and the Queen had a notoriously difficult relationship.
Diana was the People’s Princess, winning the heart of the nation for her philanthropic nature – but not the heart of her mothering-law it seemed.
The Queen became frustrated with Diana as she voiced concerns about her failing marriage to Prince Charles.
And when Diana died in a dramatic car accident in the early hours of August 31, 21997, the Queen was criticised for the way she handled the national mood – being aloof in the days that followed her death.
She was also condemned for remaining at her Scotland residence for too long and for failing to return to London after the news broke.
But it seems the trauma of Princess Diana’s death may have stuck with the Queen – who could now be putting what she learned to good use, with Meghan Markle.
In recent weeks since the royal wedding, the pair seem to have struck up a close bond – and one royal commentator believe this is why.
Speaking exclusive to Express.co.uk, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said: “This is the sort of treatment Diana never had. She was never shown the ropes.
“Meghan is being nurtured in a totally different way.”
Even though she has only been a member of the royal family for one month, Meghan already seems to have struck up a great relationship with the Queen.
Meghan accompanied the Queen to Cheshire for an official visit earlier this month in their first solo outing.
The pair travelled overnight via the Royal Train and spent the day opening a bridge, a theatre, and charming the locals – with the Queen on hand to help Meghan with royal protocol.
And this week, the Queen looked delighted to be joined by her grandson and new granddaughter as the made their first join appearance at Royal Ascot.
Meghan will also accompany Her Majesty at a reception to present awards to the Queen’s Leaders 2018, although this time the Duchess will be joined by her husband Prince Harry.
Mr Fitzwilliams said: “The chemistry seems very genuine between Meghan and the Queen.
“It makes sense. The Queen can see it’s for the good of the Royal Family.”
Given the massive crowd that ‘Meghan-mania’ draws wherever she goes, it certainly makes sense for the Queen to want to avoid history repeating itself.
And it also seems the Queen wants to make sure Meghan knows she’s welcome and make sure she knows how to handle this new life.
“Anyone who joins the royal family knows it takes some getting used to,” said Mr Fitzwilliams.
“When you’re used to the crowds like Meghan, it obviously helps.”
James Brookes told Express.co.uk the Duchess of Sussex’s trip with Her Majesty to Cheshire showed the Royal pair “get along well” and Elizabeth II looked “genuinely happy to have some company”.
He said: “The images of them both in Cheshire speak for themselves.
“The Queen looked incredibly at ease and genuinely happy to have some company on an engagement again.
