As the mother and father of the bride the pair “will sit together” at Windsor’s St George’s Chapel when their daughter ties the knot – 22 years after their own divorce – according to Richard Fitzwilliams.
The show of unity will come despite the Duke and Duchess of York not being allowed to sit together at Prince Harry’s Royal Wedding to Meghan Markle due to royal protocol.
Sarah, also known as Fergie, turned up alone to the wedding – completing the Long Walk to Windsor Castle solo while her ex husband and daughters arrived together.
But Mr Fitzwilliams said the former royal couple will sit side by side after Prince Andrew walks his daughter, Princess Eugenie, down the aisle on October 12.
He said: “Royal protocol is made by the royals themselves.
“I suspect they may well sit together, as the bride’s parents, it would make sense.
“The issue is one of some sensitivity as the Duchess has rarely been included in royal events in recent years as she is no longer a member of the Royal Family.”
Although Ms Ferguson, 58, maintains a close relationship with her ex-husband, she has a complicated relationship with the Royal Family.
Prince Philip is said to have never forgiven the Duchess of York over embarrassment of her involvement in a toe-sucking scandal.
The duchess paved the way for her exit from the royals in 1992 when pictures emerged of the redhead receiving a toe-sucking from oil tycoon John Bryan, who was described as her financial advisor.
The duchess was staying at Balmoral when the shocking images were published and the Windsors came across them in the morning newspapers at the breakfast table.
Her relationship with her in-laws, particularly the Duke of Edinburgh, was left in tatters.
In 1992 the Duke and Duchess of York finally announced their separation after reportedly spending a lot of time part while Prince Andrew was on royal duties.
Just months later the photographs emerged of the Duchess sunbathing topless and frolicking in St Tropez.
And in 1996, the duchess and Prince Andrew, who have two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, divorced.
But Ms Ferguson and Prince Andrew have maintained a close bond for the sake of their two daughters, with the duchess even congratulating her ex-husband in June when he took part in Trooping the Colour for the first time as Colonel in Chief of the Grenadier Guards.
She was most recently invited to her nephew Prince Harry’s wedding, despite being snubbed from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s royal wedding.
During an interview with Hello last year, Ms Ferguson revealed her close relationship with her ex-husband, whom she still shares a residence with.
She said: ”A table can’t stand on three legs, really, so you have the Duke and I, and the two girls.
“We’re a family unit and we lead by example. We support each other emotionally and we support each other health wise.
“At least every two weeks we sit down and communicate, the four of us.
“I think the one thing I’ve done incredibly well – although I say it myself – is that I’m a really good mum. And I think my girls shows that.”
