The baby prince is fifth in line to the throne and one of seven great-grand-children of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Louis, who will be 11 weeks old, will be welcomed into the Christian faith dressed in the same gown used for George and Charlotte, a replica of the intricate lace and satin dress made for Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter in 1841.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to attend along with the Queen, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Middleton family.

Louis’s godparents are expected to be announced on the morning of the christening, with William and Kate likely to choose close friends as they did for Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

It is likely that he will have five godparents, as does Charlotte, whereas George, a future king, has seven. Among the favourites, according to bookmakers Ladbrokes, is William’s outgoing private secretary Miguel Head.

William’s childhood nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke, now Tiggy Pettifer, and Kate’s former private secretary Rebecca Priestley are also thought to be likely choices.

The Duchess of Cornwall’s daughter Laura Lopes, whose daughter Eliza who was one of William and Kate’s bridesmaids, is also thought to be a candidate.

William and Kate selected William van Cutsem as a godfather for George and may pick one of his siblings – Hugh, Edward or Nicholas – or Hugh’s wife Rose.

William is godfather to Hugh and Rose’s daughter Grace, a bridesmaid at their wedding who almost stole the balcony show by covering her ears at the flypast.

William’s cousin Peter Phillips has odds of 8/1, while Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are at 7/1.

There is also likely to be a link to William’s late mother – perhaps through one of Diana’s sisters Lady Jane Fellowes or Lady Sarah McCorquodale.
