Anger outbursts can be dangerous, trigger heart attacks

Researchers found anger outbursts can heighten an individual’s risk of heart attacks and strokes (cardiovascular events). People who have existing risk factors such as heart disease are more susceptible than the general population and the risks are increased in the two hour period after an anger outburst.

Being aware of the risks and ‘anger’ triggers could save a person’s life.

It is believed the anger outburst causes physiological changes in the body that is related to stress. These changes in the cardiovascular system contribute to the heightened risks. Along with rage (anger outbursts), mourning the loss of a loved one appears to increase the risk of a heart attack.

Previous research suggested the death of a loved one can also increase the risk of a heart attack within the first 24 hours and raise the risk up to 14 percent in the following months.

Cardiovascular disease is also known as heart disease. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and raises the risks of heart attacks. Medical experts suggest reducing stress and making healthy lifestyle changes to lower the risk of cardiovascular events.

Individuals who are prone to anger outbursts are advised to learn about relaxation techniques and to avoid situations that may trigger anger.
