Rush’s wife Kathryn Rogers announced the devastating news on his radio show.
She said: “It is with profound sadness I must share with you directly that our beloved Rush, my wonderful husband, passed away this morning due to complications from lung cancer.
“As so many of you know, losing a loved one is terribly difficult – even more so when that loved one is larger than life. Rush will forever be the greatest of all time.
“Rush was an extraordinary man, a gentle giant, brilliant, quick-witted, genuinely kind, extremely generous, passionate, courageous and the hardest-working person I know.”
Rush hosted The Rush Limbaugh Show since 1988 and garnered around 20 million listeners.
The radio host reported his diagnosis on February 2, 2020 on air.
Rush married four times in his 70 years.
He first wed back in 1977 to Roxy Maxine McNeely but they later divorced in 1980.
He then married Michelle Sixta in 1983. They divorced in 1990, and four years later Rush tied the knot with Marta Fitzgerald.
The couple divorced in 2004 and six years later, in 2010, Rush married Kathryn Adams Limbaugh.
Rush was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump at the State of the Union address last year.
The then First Lady Melania Trump presented the honour after his cancer diagnosis announcement.
