Hackney police attack: "We are not punch bags" (Watch)

A “sickening and disgraceful attack” on police officers who stopped to help an apparent assault victim has been condemned by the home secretary and police chiefs.

In the footage, filmed from a car window, a group of people can be seen involved in an altercation on a footpath next to a park.

The incident occurred in the borough at around 7.10pm this evening (June 10), representatives from The Metropolitan Police Federation confirmed.

An officer appears to be attempting to handcuff a male on the floor, before several members of the public make attempts to intervene.

One appears to take a seflie during the incident after another officer arrives on the scene to support her colleague.

A statement from The Metropolitan Police Federation (MPF) described the attack as ‘disgraceful’.

Chairman Ken Marsh said: We are aware of a video circulating on social media this evening of a disgraceful attack on our colleagues from multiple individuals earlier today.

“Yet again this starkly shows the dangers [officers] face and the bravery they show each and every day keeping Londoners safe.

“On this occasion our colleagues are thankfully only reporting minor injuries – but the reality is it could have been much worse.

“We are not society’s punchbags.
