Essex lorry deaths: Post-mortems to begin on 39 victims, Report

The first post-mortem examinations are set to be carried out on the 39 people found dead in a refrigerated lorry trailer in Essex.

The bodies were found after the truck parked up at an Essex industrial estate in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police are continuing to question a 25-year-old man from Portadown in County Armagh on suspicion of murder.

Eleven of the bodies have now been removed to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford where post-mortems will be carried out.

It is believed the 31 men and eight women who were found dead in the trailer were Chinese.

China’s ambassador to the UK, Mr Liu, tweeted: “The Chinese Embassy has sent a team led by the minister-counsellor in charge of consular affairs to Essex, England.

“They have met with the local police, who said that they are verifying the identity of the 39 deceased, whose nationality still cannot be confirmed.”

Irish police are conducting follow-up inquiries in relation to the registrations and movements of the refrigerated container and the Irish-owned truck.

Three addresses have been searched in Northern Ireland as part of the probe.
