The new coins include a reissue of the ‘rarest’ 50p in circulation and a piece dedicated to Roger Bannister’s four-minute-mile.

The 50p piece is one of the most recognisable coins in your purse or pocket.

With seven sides, the Royal Mint describes the silver piece as “revolutionary”.

To mark the 50p’s 50th anniversary, the Mint has commissioned a set of special commemorative 50p pieces which celebrate key cultural milestones.

The new coins, which include a reissue of the ‘rarest’ 50p, are released today.

They include a 50p marking Roger Bannister’s world record sub-four-minute mile and a reissue of the previous ‘New Pence’ 50p design.

Other coins celebrate the Scouts and Guides’ 100th anniversaries, and a reissue of the Kew Garden’s 250th anniversary coin – which is the rarest 50p in circulation, with just 210,000 minted.

The Royal Mint has released a proof set of the limited edition coins.

It said the designs had been carefully selected to celebrate key cultural milestones and favourite pieces of coin collectors.

Nicola Howell, director of the consumer business at The Royal Mint, said: “Since the 50p entered UK circulation 50 years ago, the distinctive design has become a popular addition to the nation’s pockets and wallets.
