RED DEER, ALTA.—A central Alberta man who stabbed a woman 58 times has been found not criminally responsible for her death.

Jordan Koizumi, who is 27, was charged with the second-degree murder of Tina Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer bled to death inside her home in 2016 after opening her door to help the homeless man.

Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench heard that Koizumi has mental health problems, including paranoid schizophrenia.

Justice Adam Germain says Koizumi is a troubled and tortured soul.

His ruling means Koizumi could spend the rest of his life in a psychiatric facility.

“It’s not a finding of guilt, and it’s not a finding of innocence,” defence lawyer Patrick Edgerton said Friday.

“It’s a third finding that allows the accused to be transferred to a psychiatric facility rather than to a jail.”

Edgerton said there will be yearly reviews of Koizumi’s mental state, and if he continues to be deemed a risk to the public he may never be released.

Crown lawyer Dominique Mathurin said it was a fair trial.
