Princess Diana was born on July 1, at Park House on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, as the youngest daughter of John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, who later became the 8th Earl Spencer.

Prince William and Prince Harry have repeatedly talked about their fondness of Diana and last year recounted heartwarming stories about their mother.

In an ITV interview, William and Harry revealed unseen photographs of Princess Diana as they looked through an old family photo album.

Harry looked tearful but the brothers also remembered their mother with great humour – especially over their clothes.

He said: “I would love to ask her now because I genuinely think she got satisfaction out of dressing myself and William up in the most bizarre outfits.

“Normally matching – it was weird shorts – shiny shoes with a clip on. The photos just make me laugh and I think ‘how could you do that to us?’.”

Harry also remembers Diana as “one of the naughtiest parents”.

He added: ”She was fun through and through. One of her mottos to me was, ‘You can be as naughty as you want, just don’t get caught.’

“She would come and watch us play football and, you know, smuggle sweets into our socks.”

Prince William was 15 and his brother Harry just 12 when their mother was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, a death that shocked the world.

Earlier that year, Princess Diana stunned the world as she was pictured standing in a partially cleared minefield in Angola as she spearheaded a campaign to end the explosive devices.

She took the incredibly brave decision to walk through a cleared path through the live minefield dressed in a white shirt, beige trousers and brown leather loafers as well as a plastic vizor on her head.

The People’s Princess was known for her charitable endeavours and in 1987 Diana shocked the world when in front of cameras took the hand of a man suffering from HIV.

The powerful gesture of compassion helped dispel the myths surrounding the disease and shifted public perception of sufferers, a cause her sons William and Harry continue to champion.

Diana had just opened the UK’s first dedicated HIV and Aids unit at London Middlesex Hospital when the now iconic moment occurred.

Diana one told BBC’s Martin Bashir: “Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society.

“It is a goal and an essential part of my life, a kind of destiny.”

Last year marked 20 years since Dian’s death and to mark what would have been her 56th birthday the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry attended a private service at her grave on the Althorp estate.

Kensington Palace said in a brief statement: “The service, which will fall on what would have been the Princess’s birthday, will be conducted by The Archbishop of Canterbury and attended by her family.”

Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer paid tribute to his late sister at the service, saying: “She deserves a place in history”.

On Friday tributes had already began rolling in for the late princess’s 57th birthday on social media.

Royal fans have continued to observe the late princess’ birthday after she died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
