It was their first engagement together without Princes Harry and William and the duo were clearly having a lot of fun.

English Rose Kate and American actress Meghan made it clear they have formed a special trans-Atlantic relationship of their own since the royal wedding.

Meghan cheered on her friend Serena Williams in the ladies’ singles final at SW19 but it was a sad end to the day as the seventime champion lost to Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 6-3.

The duchesses, who sat in the royal box in Centre Court to watch the match, arrived at midday and were greeted by cheers from tennis fans waiting for the resumption of the men’s singles semi-final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The match could not be completed on Friday night due to a curfew. Meghan and Kate stopped and spoke with a number of ball boys and girls and junior players.

When they passed over a bridge the crowds gathered below applauded and took pictures. Meghan waved back.

She was wearing wide-legged cream trousers with a blue and white Ralph Lauren shirt in a nod to the designer who supplies clothing for the championship’s ball boys and girls. She carried a white wide-brimmed hat with a black ribbon.

Kate was wearing a Jenny Packham dress with nude suede heels and matching handbag.

Meghan and Kate were joined in the Royal Box by Harry Potter star Emma Watson, McMafia’s James Norton, Westworld’s Thandie Newton and Wolf Hall’s Sir Mark Rylance.

Among the celebrities sitting in other areas of the packed Centre Court were Titanic actress Kate Winslet, radio presenter Chris Evans and True Detective star Woody Harrelson.

In keeping with the starstudded occasion, former women’s world number one Williams had Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, golfer Tiger Woods and US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour among her guests in her player’s box.

After her semi-final win on Thursday, Williams had hailed her “wonderful” friendship with Meghan and said she was looking forward to her attending.

It comes two months after the tennis star attended Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding in Windsor.

Williams said: “We’ve always had a wonderful friendship. Every year, for a couple years, she comes out to Wimbledon, and has supported me.

“Now she’s supporting me in a different role.

“But our friendship is still exactly the same.”
