Sophie, who is married to the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, beamed as she accepted a bouquet of flowers from the young girl on the steps of the Abbey.

In another heartwarming snap, the girl can been seen smiling as Sophie took the time to talk to her.

The Countess, who wore a gorgeous green dress and cream hat for the occasion, was then pictured stroking the girl’s soft toy animal as the pair had a quick chat.

During her life Princess Diana was praised for her way with children, often lowering herself down to meet them eye to eye when she talked them and it appears Sophie is choosing to follow in her footsteps.

The late Princess has been repeatedly pictured with children and in one photo schoolgirls looked in awe as Diana sat down with them during a visit to a Hindu temple in London.

Diana even gave one lucky girl a quick hug.

Today the Countess of Wessex heard a rousing speech about the NHS by its chief executive Simon Stevens.

Speaking to a congregation, Mr Stevens said: “Seventy years ago almost to the day, Aneurin Bevan predicted that the health service ‘must always be changing, growing and evolving’ so that ‘it must always appear to be inadequate’.

“Of course, we’re not the only country on this journey. So we can all learn, as well as teach. That’s how medicine advances.”

Paying tribute to the health service’s 1.5 million staff, he added: “Today we give thanks – for their service, for their skill, and for their compassion.

“And for their bravery at times of exceptional challenge. Nurses volunteering alongside Ebola patients. Junior doctors with victims of terrorism. Ambulance crews, GPs and therapists at Grenfell.

“And, yes, once again the skill and the bravery of NHS intensive care staff at Salisbury District Hospital – probably the best hospital in the world to be caring for these new victims.”

Teenager Freya Lewis was given  following the Manchester terror attack.

Sophie also heard from teenager Freya Lewis, who had to learn to walk again after she was severely injured in the Manchester terror attack.

Freyer received a huge round of applause after speaking of her own experience of the NHS undergoing more than 70 hours of surgery after the attack.

She said: “I don’t have the words to express how grateful I am to all the amazing staff who cared for me.

“I’m only alive and here today because of the incredible care I received.”
