But local media reports Princess Claire, a former land surveyor who was born Claire Coombs, has become increasingly frustrated by her husband’s behaviour.

Prince Laurent, 54, has become isolated within the Belgian royal family following a series of gaffes and controversial outbursts.

He had his state income cut by the Belgian government earlier this year for making an unauthorised visit to the Chinese Embassy at an event honouring the Red Army.

The breach of state protocol led King Philippe and Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel, to reduce his annual state income of €300,000 (£265,700) by 15 percent.

The Prince then got himself into further trouble when he said his income was akin to the “starting pay of a civil servant” and compared his situation to that of the Jewish victims of Nazi concentration camps.

He also warned that victims of bullying were often provoked into extreme measures and said: “There are a lot of students who commit a murder because they are bullied on social media.”

Belgian media quoted sources as saying that Princess Claire felt “very tormented” by the situation and she has not attended a number of recent public events, including a memorial service for the former King Baudouin who died 25 years ago.

A close friend said: “Claire is available” but “the doors are closed for her and that she is partly paying the price for the problems with Laurent”.

Prince Laurent’s expenses now have to be checked by the Belgian Court of Auditors and he has reportedly refused to pay for his wife’s dresses and haircuts for public events.

Princess Claire’s friends said she had since devoted her time to the couple’s three children Princess Louise, 14, Prince Nicolas, 12, and Prince Aymeric, 12.

One friend said the Princess “sees the future with a heavy heart”, and added: “It is a heavy burden to show her legendary optimism.

“Being the wife of Prince Laurent is not easy in these difficult times.”
