Her reasoning is there are too many people to meet and events become a “handshaking exercise”.

She noted others in her family do greet people in this way – the Queen and the younger Royals like Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are known to regularly shake hands with the public.

But the Princess said: “We never shook hands. The theory was that you couldn’t shake hands with everybody, so don’t start.

“So I kind of stick to that, but I notice others don’t.”

The official rules on hand-shaking were relaxed by the Queen in the 1970s, but at least one Royal kept on the tradition.

She added: “It’s not for be to say that it’s wrong, but I think the initial concept was that it was patently absurd to start shaking hands.

“It seems to be that it’s become a shaking hands exercise rather than a walkabout.”

In a new documentary Queen of the World, Princess Anne also explained how the presence of technology makes it difficult to talk and lamented a time when mobile phones were not being waved in her face.

She said: “It has changed. I’m glad I’m starting now because at least you had people to talk to – now you don’t, really.

“Phones are bad enough, but the i-pads! You can’t even see their heads!”

The Queen’s daughter added she finds it odd the need for people to document everything in their lives with photographs.

She said: “I either don’t bother or just say, ‘Look, if you want to ask…I suggest you put that down.

“It is weird. People’s don’t believe they’ve experienced an event unless they’ve taken a photograph.”

Despite her qualms with the modern differences to the being a Royal, she is officially the most hardworking Royal of the year so far.

By May, she had racked up 75 days of service and her lead is followed by the Earl of Wessex at 59, Prince Charles on 52, Prince William on 33 and the Queen on 26.
