The Duchess of Värmland said she encountered a flood of online bullying after her relationship with Prince Carl Philip went public in 2010.

She said during an interview with Sweden’s TV4: “I was met with an enormous hate storm, form people who had opinions about as a person, about my relationship.

“I was surprised and it definitely affected me.

“I didn’t under that people had such need to express how badly they felt about me. It was very tough.”

The 33-year-old used to be a glamour model while she studied in Stockholm.

She posed for men’s magazine Slitz wearing just a bikini bottom and a boa constrictor when she was 20.

She was also voted Miss Slitz 2004 by readers.

Following her modelling career from Slitz she landed a spot on the Swedish reality show Paradise Hotel and made it to the final.

The show follows a group of singles living in a luxury resort and puts them against each other to see who will remain at the hotel the longest.

As a result of the bullying Sofia received from her past, she and Prince Carl started the Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia Foundation to fight hate speech and online bullying.

Sofia said: “I was an adult when this happened to me, so I can only imagine in a school environment and in other instances how big this can be in a child’s world.

“They don’t have the same perspective on life and don’t have the understanding that it’s not really about you and that you should see past it.”

How does the mum-of-two stay above the criticism?

She said: “For me, I learned to actively stay away from reading about myself.

“So in my world, I felt like things died down.”

Princess Sofia and Prince Carl married in June 2015.

The pair have two children, Prince Alexander, two, and Prince Gabriel, 11 months.

Last week, the pair shared an adorable new photo of their two young children on Instagram.

The picture shows the brothers, Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel, sitting next to each other on a bench in the grounds of Solliden, the Swedish royal’s summer residence.

The royal couple have captioned the picture “summer in Solliden” with a yellow heart emoji.
