Now Broadchurch actress Olivia Colman will be hoping her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the next two series of the Netflix drama The Crown will be equally well-received.

The royal show’s Twitter account this week published an image of Colman in character, sipping tea while dressed in a pale pink suit and a pearl necklace, with the teasing message “patience.”

Following in the footsteps of Foy who portrayed the monarch during the early years of her reign in The Crown, Colman has been chosen to play The Queen in the third and fourth series of the critically-acclaimed drama, which is expected to cover events from 1964 to 1976.

Speaking last year, the star of The Night Manager said she is “so thrilled to be part of The Crown” and was “utterly gripped watching it”, adding that Foy will be an “incredibly hard act to follow”.

But Colman is not the only actress to play the role of Britain’s longest serving monarch. Here we look at some of the other actresses who have played her over the years.

HELEN MIRREN: THE QUEEN 2006

Mirren won an Oscar for the film which follows the Royal Family’s response to the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

CLAIRE FOY: THE CROWN 2016

Winning a Bafta for her performance, Foy said: “To play a member of the Royal Family you have to forget all these preconceived ideas.”

SARAH GADON: A ROYAL NIGHT OUT 2015

Playing teenage Elizabeth during the 1945 VE Day celebrations, Gadon said she was “trying to humanise” an icon.

ROSEMARY LEACH: MARGARET 2009

The BBC drama caused controversy by claiming the Queen convinced Thatcher to resign as prime minister.

EMMA THOMPSON: WALKING THE DOGS 2012

The plot was based on Michael Fagan’s Buckingham Palace intrusion in 1982.
