The Daily Mail’s Richard Kay wrote: “Tregunter Road was our code for escape,’ she once told me, ‘it meant our leap for freedom.’

“By then, however, her love for Hoare had subsided, but her wish for a life outside the Royal Family had not.

“It has always been said that Diana lost her nerve for that double break-out with Fergie from behind palace walls.

“And that when Fergie’s split from Prince Andrew was announced, the princess – whose marital unhappiness was the greater of the two women – quietly changed her mind.”

Princess Diana is said to have started an affair with Princes Charles’ friend and top art dealer, Mr Hoare, in 1992 after her father Earl Spencer died.

She was reportedly obsessed with her lover and confessed to her confidante, Lady Bowker that she “daydreamed of living in Italy with the handsome Hoare”.

But when Mr Hoare’s wife threatened divorce in 1993, he broke off the affair.

The Duchess of York is said to have had Diana to thank for her romance with Prince Andrew, as the late Princess of Wales is the one who invited her to the dinner where she met her then-future husband.

She also later hosted Fergie and Prince Andrew at her home with Charles before the two’s relationship became public knowledge.

During their marriages and later their divorces from the royal princes, the two women were close.

After their marriages ended they holidayed in the South of France together.

However, for unknown reasons, their friendship not last.

The redhead previously revealed how she had not spoken to Princess Diana for a year before she passed away, but that she attempted to make contact.
