Philip, 97, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-commander in the Royal Navy on this day in 1950 – when Anne was born.

And those in the royals’ inner circle have claimed Anne is Philip’s favourite child.

So Philip may have had a hand in choosing a charming picture of the Princess Royal looking at her best to share on the Queen’s official Twitter account.

The picture showed Her Majesty’s daughter, taken earlier this year in June when Anne attended Ascot.

In the tweet was the message: “Wishing HRH The Princess Royal a very Happy Birthday! #HappyBirthdayHRH.”

After Anne was born, friends claim Philip told everyone: “It’s the sweetest girl.”

Eileen Parker, wife of Philip’s close friend Mike Parker, previously said the Duke of Edinburgh: “Always had more fun with Anne. Charles is more like the Queen, while Anne is very like Prince Philip.”

Anne has similar interests to Prince Philip – she shares his love of sports, particularly horse racing for which she competed in the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal.

She has also followed his sterling example in dedicating her life to royal duties.

Anne has even shown a tendency to compete with her father, as in 2017 she undertook more royal engagements and official visits than Prince Philip, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry put together.

When Anne was asked about whether she would ever slow down on her commitments, she said: “Look around at the members of my family who are considerably older than me and tell me whether they have set an example which suggests I might – unlikely.”

Philip retired last summer at the age of 96 after 65 years of royal service.
