The Duke of Edinburgh, 96, is the oldest male member of the British royal family in history and has been at the Queen’s side for nearly seven decades.

The Queen’s husband was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on June 10, 1921. He is the nephew of King Constantine of Greece.

Educated in Paris, Germany and Britain before joining the Royal Navy at the age of 18 in 1939.

The Prince distinguished himself as a member of the Royal Navy during the Second World War.

Philip and Elizabeth’s love story, who are distant cousins, began in 1939 when the young princess was just 13 years old. The couple met during a royal visit to his naval college in Dartmouth and they started to write to each other.

The dashing young Greek prince and the 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey in 1947.

Since the Queen’s accession to the throne in 1953, the Duke has supported his wife in her royal duties as sovereign, accompanying her to ceremonies, state dinners, and tours abroad.

Philip has been the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and continues to stand by the Queen’s side.
