The monarch only discovered that false rumours of her spouse’s death had been circulating online and trending on Twitter when her staff began to ask how he was.

The falsehoods were trending throughout Friday, as people speculated that the Duke of Edinburgh had died.

The Queen was said to have been raging and called her 97-year-old husband for a tense and stressful ten minute conversation, in which they spoke about how to deal with fake news.

A source told The Sun: “They both agreed there was little they could do but they are very, very annoyed.

“It’s not nice to hear people the world over commenting on your health or death, even if you’re used to being in the public eye.

“It shows how the internet can get out of control.

“The Queen is absolutely fuming over this and thinks it’s disgraceful.”

Buckingham Palace’s switchboard is said to have been inundated with calls over the rumours.

The situation was made even tougher for the head of state, as she is currently on holiday at Craigowen Lodge in Balmoral, while Prince Philip is at Sandringham House.

The Queen enjoys her summer months at the private residence and is frequently joined by other members of the Royal Family.

The source added: “If he was ill, she would be with him instead of starting her Scottish holiday.

“In fact not only is he not very ill, he is actually in fine form and is recovering well from his recent hip operation.

“It has given him a new lease of life and he hopes to live to 100 just like the Queen Mum!”

The Queen and Prince Philip married on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey to a reception of 2,000 guests, with the ceremony being broadcasted to approximately 200 million radio listeners worldwide.

The Queen’s first encounter with Prince Philip was when they were children, at a wedding in 1934, while it is thought that she had been in love with the former Greek royal since she was 13.

The couple had their first son, Prince Charles, in 1949.
