The Queen and the 97-year-old hosted the Oscar winning actress who sat next to the senior royals for the occasion.

Ms Blanchett was left stunned by an apparent request from the now-retired royal as they enjoyed lunch at the royal residence.

The actress through the monarch and her husband would want to talk about her acting career and notably her lead role in the 1998 film Elizabeth.

But instead, Prince Philip had other ideas.

Ms Blanchett told ITV’s Jonathan Ross: “There were 12 of us, and I couldn’t work out for the life of me why I’d been invited.

“Playing Queen Elizabeth and sitting next to her, I thought, ‘Maybe she’s seen the movie and wants to ask me about my interpretation.’

“I sat next to Philip and he said, ‘I hear you’re an actor? I was given a DVD player for Christmas and I can’t work out whether I put the green cord in or the red cord.’”

Ms Blanchett let a small laugh before adding: “I thought, ‘He’s invited me to lunch to tell me about his DVD player!’ ”

Earlier this year Prince Philip underwent a hip replacement operation, sparking health fears after the senior royal remained in hospital for six days.

However just weeks after the operation the robust royal was seen making the Queen smile as he attended the third day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

In June Philip accompanied the Queen for the Royal Windsor Cup polo match in Egham and prior to that, he joined the Queen for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Royal Wedding on May 19.

Philip appeared a little frail at the wedding but appeared in good spirits as he watched his grandson wed Meghan.

The Duke has also been repeatedly pictured taking the reins of a horse and carriage on the grounds of Windsor Castle at various times throughout the year.

Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip in The Crown, revealed in an interview with Variety magazine that the Queen’s husband is considered a popular favourite among royal staff.

He said: “One of the interesting challenges for me was that I felt there was a sort of a misconception and a preconception about Prince Philip, which reduced him a bit.

“And actually all the research I did found him to be brilliantly funny, very clever, very popular.

“In the royal house he’s the most popular of all of them.

“If you’ve talked to any of the staff, Philip’s the one they all love really. I think more than a lot of them, he’s a bit more of a man of the people.”

Mr Smith comments are understood to be based on several interviews he did with palace staff as part of his research for the role, which Matt played for two seasons of the Netflix show.
