The oldest of the Cambridge children turns five tomorrow, and the excitement for the little royal will be no different to any other child.

The royal family traditionally release a new photo of the birthday boy or girl to celebrate the occasion.

A few of these have been family snaps taken by Kate herself and show the little royals growing up through the years.

However, away from the public eye, both George and Charlotte have celebrated their birthdays with family and friends.

How do royal children spend their birthday?

For Prince George’s first birthday, a quiet tea party was arranged at Kensington Palace.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s parents were invited, as well as William’s ex Principle Private Secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton.

William’s cousin Zara Phillips and her husband Mark Tindall also attended, alongside Kate’s brother James and sister Pippa.

Proud parents William and Kate shared photos of the little royal enjoying a recent day out to the National History Museum and issued a statement.

They said: “We would like to take this opportunity on George’s first birthday to thank everyone over the last year, wherever we have met them, both at home and overseas, for their warm and generous good wishes to George and our family.”

Princess Charlotte’s first birthday party was held at Anmer Hall in Norfolk where the Cambridges had moved to.

Grandparents Prince Charles and Carole and Michael Middleton attended the party.

Photos were also released to commemorate Charlottes birthday, taken by the Duchess.

Prince George’s second birthday party was also held at Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

Close family and a few young children were invited to the event, although many of the royal family were busy with official duties so were unable to attend.

However, William was granted time off to celebrate his son’s second birthday.

Princess Charlotte turning two was marked by the releasing of a cute snap in which she is sat on some hay bales.

Again Kate proved to be quite the photographer, taking the image herself.

For George’s third birthday, photos were released with one showing the little prince feeding the Cambridges’ dog Lupo an ice cream.

The caption accompanying the photos said: “Can’t believe it’s been three years already!”

Princess Charlotte’s third birthday was only days after younger brother Prince Louis was born so would have been a quiet family event.

The Queen flew to Kensington Palace to meet the youngest royal and see Charlotte for her birthday.

For Prince George’s fourth birthday, the days before were spent on an official tour of Poland and Germany with his parents.

He was seen happily grinning from the cockpit of a helicopter, and an image of him beaming ear to ear at Kensington Palace was released by the royal family to mark the occasion.
