The tennis star said she and the American royal have been “relying on each other a lot” in a candid interview where she opened up about her “long-time” friend and her “historic” Royal Wedding to Prince Harry.

In a candid interview Serena revealed she had been texting Meghan on the same morning – just three days after controversial defeat in the US Open final.

Speaking to Australian news programme, The Sunday Project, Serena said: “We were actually just texting each other this morning.

“We have known each other for a long time, but we really kind of are relying on each other right a lot recently.”

Although Serena didn’t reveal any details about the texts, it was clear both the super-high profile women have turned to each other in their time of need when being constantly in the spotlight got too much.

Serena faced vilification from social media and huge coverage in the traditional media after her outburst during her US Open final loss when she called the umpire a “liar” and a “thief”.

She later accused the umpire of “sexism” for penalising a game.

And Meghan has also dealt with her fair share of pressure over the past few weeks amid a very public fallout with her estranged father Thomas Marke and her family.

The pair have a close bond, with Serena and her husband Alexis Ohanian being treated to top seats during the Royal Wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Serena looked back on the “monumental moment” she got to watch Meghan walk down the aisle for her spectacular royal nuptials in May.

She said: “To have such a monumental moment in England, nonetheless of all the places, I felt like we were literally watching history.

“I feel like in a few years we are going to look back at that moment and it’s going to be so historic. It’s going to be something that people never forget.

“The whole service was really wonderful, and most of all I just wanted to see my friend be happy. And I think that’s what happened.”

The tennis star is among an array of celeb friends Meghan Markle made when she rocketed to fame in US drama Suits.

Serena was described as a “confidante” of Meghan’s after the pair met at a charity football game in 2015.

And while Meghan supported the 36-year-old at Wimbledon over the summer, the royal family’s newest member missed out on her friend’s outburst on the court at the Open earlier this month.

Serena was docked a game for verbal abuse and had a point penalty for racquet smashing and a code violation for coaching.

The tennis star told she confused by the coach’s admission that he was coaching her from the stands.

She said: “I just don’t understand what Patrick was talking about.

“We don’t have signals, we’ve never have signals. He said he made a motion, so I was like, ‘Okay, you made a motion and now you’re telling people you were coaching me?

“That doesn’t make sense, why would you say that?’’

But Serena’s publicist was forced to intervene when the interviewer Lisa Wilkinson continued to probe the tennis star.

The publicist told Ms Wilkinson: “Sorry, that’s four question about the US Open, so can you change topics?”
