The former Ukip leader said her comments during the service reminded him what a “truly extraordinary woman” she is.

He said: “The Queen said ‘I remember the Battle of Britain being fought over the skies above us and we shall never forget the courage and sacrifice of that time’.

“Not only beautifully crafted, powerful and passionate words but it just makes you remember just how long the Queen has been part of our national life in this country.

“On the throne for 66 years, a truly extraordinary woman.

“I know it’s impossible and perhaps it sounds stupid but I do really hope she lives forever.”

The 92-year-old beamed as she watched the spectacular display, which saw 100 military aircraft fly across the skies of London, just after 1pm.

She was joined by family members including Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Kate, Prince William, Princess Anne, Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex for the iconic moment on the balcony of her residence.

It was 100 years ago on April 1 1918 that the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to create the RAF – the world’s first independent air service.

The Queen has today led a day of national celebrations as the Royal Air Force marks a century since its formation, which started with a ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, addressed the congregation and said the RAF has in its first 100 years been a decisive factor in serving the country, as well as being key in protecting democracy and freedom.

With an RAF ensign draped over the high altar behind him in the abbey, Mr Welby also highlighted how members of his own family have served and been killed in the RAF – drawing attention to his own father who flew low level sorties in Burma.

Along with Charles, the monarch presented a new Queen’s Colour to the RAF in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace before making a brief speech.

She said: “The new RAF Queen’s Colour provides an opportunity to congratulate the RAF’s remarkable contribution over the last 100 years.”

The monarch then praised the RAF for “safeguarding freedom and security many part of the world”.

She later remembered the Battle of Britain, saying: “I remember the Battle of Britain being battled in the sky above us and we should never forget the sacrifice.”
