Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary and their four children surprised locals while on their tour to this part of the Danish Kingdom.

When asked what he thought of the Faroese traditional dress, 12-year-old Prince Christian said: “It is a nice costume.

“The good thing is that it keeps us warm.”

His mother, Crown Princess Mary, was enamoured with the touching reception her family received.

She said: “It has been a warm reception we have received. It has been an exciting programme right from the start of our stay.

“It could not be better. And the rain stopped when we arrived so this could not have been better.”

Crown Princess Mary, 46, and two daughters, Princess Isabella, 11, and Princess Josephine, seven, wore the female’s garb of a dress with an open sweater.

The sweater is held together with lace and silver buttons, and is fitted with a cape.

The young princesses wore blue dresses with a blue bonnet and their mother wore a forest green dress.

Crown Prince Frederik, 50, and two sons Prince Christian and Prince Vincent, seven, wore a waistcoat and felt coats finished with silver buttons.

They also wore blue stockings and the recognisable floppy hats.

The family travelled by their royal yacht, the “Danneborg”, from Copenhagen, which gave them the opportunity to wave to well-wishers while they approached the dock.

Crown Princess Mary was presented with a pink and yellow bouquet of posies when she stepped off the yacht.

Their four-day visit started on Thursday in the capital of Torshavn.

The family will conduct other engagements and visit government buildings on the Tinganes peninsula and participate in another welcoming ceremony.

They have already visited a rowing club where they were be greeted by the prime minister and were received at a banquet.

The last member of the Danish Royal Family to visit to the Faroe Islands was their Queen Margarethe II in 2016.

She visited the towns of Sudbury, Sandoy and Torshavn.

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago halfway between Norway and Iceland and are an autonomous country within Denmark.

The county has been self-governing since 1948.
